On November 24th, 2007, the sweetest princess joined this earth, our first born, Sadie. We are thrilled to celebrate her 10th birthday with her today. I can’t wait for her to see all of the fun surprises we have in store for her. Today’s blog post is all about our Sadie girl. Follow along, taking a trip down memory lane to read some of our favorite memories together, & to see to super cute photos.
Sadie officially joined our family on February 8th, 2008 aka the very day Lorenzo & I moved out of our parents houses & into our first place together. Obviously we could hardly wait to add a dog to our family. Sadie was just under 11wks of age & the cutest little muffin-pie that we ever did see. She was instantly attached emotionally & physically. She sat on my lap alllll day long, literally. Like even when I went pee, she would jump on my lap, haha. She was a hyper ball of energy that most enjoyed running up & down our apartment stairs, playing with “cornhead”, eating “jon-jon” (a language we made up for Sadie that Lorenzo & I still use to this day), & sleepover fun with my little siblings. Her favorite thing was sleeping under the blankets in between her father & I. Even when we’d move her to the side of us, we’d always wake up with her in the middle. I loved our new little family so much!
In 2009, Lorenzo & I started doing road trips almost every wkend. Sadie came with us everywhere & she loved it. She loved being in the car for short periods of time (a quick drive-thru visit) & long periods of time (like when we drove all the way from Jacksonville, Fl to Thousand Oaks, CA, back, & then back again) & every length in between. In mid-2009, we gave Sadie a sibling, in the form of cat. Haha. Our dear cat, Videl joined the fam & the two were immediately inseparable. Videl is basically a dog. He & Sadie would wrestle each other, & play fetch together. Most of our day was spent watching Sadie chase Videl one direction, & then Videl chasing Sadie in the other direction. Yes it was freaking adorable & thank goodness I have videos documenting it. Near the end of 09 we all moved to California.
We lived in FOUR cities in THREE states in 2010. We started off in Thousand Oaks, CA, which is actually our fav place we’ve ever lived. Sadie loved it because there was a trail that started just 60 feet from our front door. We walked that trail every single day. There were bunnies, which she instinctually tried to chase. We didn’t let her, of course, but it’s crazy how they (animals; dogs, in this case specifically Beagles) have such strong instincts. When we moved to LA, just minutes from Hollywood Blvd, Sadie wasn’t happy w the bathroom situation. There was zero grass. She had to go potty on concrete, which was a pain in the ass. She finally got used to it but then we moved back to Florida. Sadie & Videl were still total BFFL & still hyper almost 24/7. Near the end of 2010 we all moved to Warner Robins, GA.
Now living in the middle of nowhere, more north, Sadie was happy to experience some weather first. It snowed & stuck (a rarity in WR). Sadie had a blast exploring this weird white fluff known as snow. Later in the year, she’d experienced the joy that is jumping in fall leaves. Mid 2011, we added another sibling to the mix, another dog, our sweet William. Sadie was thrilled to have another canine in the home, but don’t worry, our cat Videl was NOT left out. They became the three musketeers & pretty much ran rampant, partying throughout the house & yard from sun up to sun down. We still went on a lot of roadtrips too, btw, traveling with the whole group, of course. Everything was so great!
2012 was the year we had our first real health scare with Sadie. I woke up one morning to Sadie’s eyes completely rolled back into her head. She was also totally uncoordinated & having trouble walking. I took her to the vet immediately, they suspected a seizure. It happened a few times more throughout the year, & never again since then. We still don’t know what happened but it was scary. Ever since then I am constantly checking on my babies while they sleep. Sadie is also very concerned for her family. If Lorenzo or I are ever physically hurt, she won’t leave our sides. If we’re ever upset, especially if I’m crying, she runs to me & legitimately tries to comfort. She is so smart, intuitive, & sweet. So anywho in 2012 we moved again, back to Jacksonville, FL where we remain to this day, so no more moves in this post haha. We also rescued a feral pregnant cat that we named Vada. She became our forever kitty. Her kittens were quite the experience for Sadie, who loved them but was freaked out by them as well. We kept one of the kittens, Rouge (who passed away a year later RIP), & so at this point Sadie realized our house was getting more & more animal filled. She wasn’t/isn’t the jealous type though, & she loved/loves her siblings, so no complaints from her.
On New Years we added another doggie to the family, Micah (RIP). He was a very special needs animal that showed up on our front porch, brain damaged, blind, w regularly occurring seizures, etc. Because of his disabilities, he & Sadie never had the same relationship as she’s had/has with our other dogs, but they definitely loved one another. Sadie would lay on the floor next to Micah, keeping him company. When he would have a seizure, she was genuinely concerned. When he passed away the following year, it was obvious she missed him very much. 2013 was a great year for the fact that we added Micah to our household, & then in the summer our cat Charlotte, we also really started rescuing, fostering, & rehoming other animals, like by the dozens. 2013 was also a really bad year. It was the year Lorenzo got in his serious motorcycle accident. He had less than a 2% chance of survival & spent a huge chunk of the year in the ICU, progressive care, & rehab. Sadie didn’t know exactly what was going on, obviously, but she did know that her Daddy was gone for months & she missed him. When he was finally able to come home it was the best day ever. I’ve never seen a dog as happy as Sadie was when he walked in the door. It was beautiful to see. At Christmas time Sadie got another present, yet another dog brother, Milo.
Once 2014 came around, Sadie started to mellow out. She still loved to run around & play, but decided being lazy was great fun too (hey I totally agree!). Because her energy slowed down & because of her breed, she started to chunk out & fast. She was still totally adorable as our chunky monkey, but for her health, she was put on diet food. She loved her diet food because she loved all food, but she also spent the next few years sneaking her siblings food, tsk tsk! Other than her sneaking food, she was basically a perfect angel. So well-behaved, a total pleasure. Oh & I know you don’t think we’re going to go an entire year without adding another family member, oh no! 2014 was the year we added Niah, our cat who really didn’t fancy dogs at first. Sadie, being the loveable babe that she is was able to change Niah’s mind though.
So at this point Sadie was one of four dogs (including our long-term foster, Kingston) & she also had four cat siblings. It was a full house & she loved it. There was always a friend to hang out with. She did keep a closer bond with Videl & William though & we started to refer to them as “The OG’s”. Sadie’s favorite hobbies at this time included running in circles through the breakfast nook to the kitchen to the dining room to the entry way to the living room back through the breakfast nook & so forth. We also started playing a new game where I would try to catch her while she ran passed me. It was impossible to catch her btw. She may have been carrying a lot of extra weight, but man her little legs could move, haha. 2015 is the year Lorenzo & I got married. We had an out-of-town wedding, & so Sadie experienced her first pet resort stay. She got to live the life of luxury for a wk, but she was still happy to come home, of course. Before the year wrapped up we added kitty Titus to the fam. He & Sadie didn’t & still don’t really hang out but that’s only because Titus doesn’t hang out with anyone.
Last year (2016), Sadie’s eyes started to get cloudy, & it progressed rather quickly. We suspected glaucoma & she was seen by multiple vets & specialist. She was diagnosed with Corneal Dystrophy which is basically when the epithelial corneal cells develop tags. She gets medicine daily & will forever. Her vision is affected a bit, but she can still see fairly well, thank goodness! We started to spend a lot more time outdoors. That included going on much longer neighborhood walks, I was so impressed with Sadie’s ability to keep up. We also found a really cool trail not far from our house & taking Sadie & our other dogs there became a regular thing. Sadie loved the trail so much that’s where we decided to take her to celebrate her 9th birthday, which fell on Thanksgiving. It was cool that her birthday fell on Thanksgiving as there’s nothing in this world I’m more thankful for than my beautiful fur-kid’os. Oliver is the animal we added in 2016 & he & Sadie did NOT like each other at all at first. Oliver would attack her & Sadie was terrified. It was sad. Patience is of course key & before too long they went from hate to being neutral to being intrigued to liking one another to loving one another.
And just like that, we’re to this year. (You’re probably thinking, “What does she mean “and just like that”, this bitch has been talking for freaking ever already” & you’re right, but hey trying to fit ten years of love into one blog post is hard) This year we finally got Sadie’s weight under control. At her heaviest she was quite overweight & now she’s at an ideal weight, which is great for her health. She is getting older, & we can tell by how much she prefers to take it easy. She does, however still get spirts of energy where she runs around at speeds that impress the hell out of me, haha. She enjoys basking in the sun, whether out back in the grass, or indoors wherever the sun shines through the window. Visits to Grandma & Grandpa’s are also her fav. Sadie is as much as people person (well dog technically) as she is an animal person (dog). She has so much love in her heart, she’s able to pass it around.
I cannot believe that our beautiful Sadie princess is ten years old today. Time certainly flies. Sadie is the light of my life & I am overjoyed to be her momma. I am so grateful for all of the beautiful memories we have made over these years & I look forward to making many more memories together. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SADIE!
